Springfield Ice Hockey Referee Seminar
The Springfield Ice Hockey Referee Seminar is October 1, 2006 from 9am until
approximately 4pm at the Franklin Room in the Nelson Center in Lincoln Park.
The annual seminar is one of the many requirements for the referee registration
process. There will be lectures on positioning, rules, judgment, and other
facets of officiating ice hockey games. There will also be a one hour on-ice
practice session. Participants must bring skates, a helmet, a whistle, a (black)
hockey helmet, and protective equipment. A referee sweater and pants can also be
worn, but are not required.
Officials must also register (before or after the seminar) with USA Hockey.
There is a $60 fee to start, increasing to $75 for Level 3. Officials
registering for Level 2 and Level 3 must take a closed book exam at the seminar
(50 true-false questions). The Seminar itself is free.
Interested persons should sign onto
www.usahockey.com and click onto the referee section and online
registration. It will explain all of the registration processes in detail.
After registering with USA Hockey, persons will be shown how to take the open
book test online (50 true and false for Level 1 and 100 questions for Level 2
and 3) and how to obtain a current rule book. Once the test is taken and passed,
and the seminar is attended, officials will get a patch and can get to work.
They would be assigned House League games at first, moving up to mini-Mite,
Mite, Squirt B, and so on.
The key is to referee games and get experience. Proper skating is important as
well as knowing the rules. It is a good idea to read and reread the rule book
throughout the year to get the details. There are many helpful ideas on the
www.usahockey.com website.
Be aware that there are other initial costs for equipment, mainly sweater, black
helmet, black pants and protective equipment. Officials receive $12-$20 per
game, and much of your first year costs go to signing up and buying equipment.
